Walking the Malvern Hills – Q&A Guide

Thinking about exploring the Malvern Hills? Whether you’re planning a short walk or tackling the entire ridge, here are the most frequently asked questions to help you prepare for your visit.

Where are the Malvern Hills?

The Malvern Hills are a range of ancient hills located on the border of Herefordshire and Worcestershire in England. They stretch for about 9 miles (14 km) and offer breathtaking panoramic views across the Severn Valley, Herefordshire, the Cotswolds, and even the Welsh mountains on clear days.

How long does it take to walk the Malvern Hills from end to end?

Walking the Malvern Hills end-to-end (from North Malvern to Chase End Hill) takes around 4–6 hours, depending on your pace, fitness, and the number of stops you make. The route is roughly 9 miles (14 km) with several steep ascents and descents, so allow plenty of time.

  • Fast walkers: around 4 hours

  • Leisurely walkers with breaks: 5–6 hours

  • Family walks with children: allow up to 7 hours with rests and picnics

If you prefer shorter walks, you can easily choose a section of the ridge and enjoy a circular or point-to-point route.

Where can I park when visiting the Malvern Hills?

There are several pay-and-display car parks managed by the Malvern Hills Trust, conveniently located along the ridge. Some of the most popular parking areas include:

  • North Quarry Car Park (Great Malvern) – great for starting the walk towards the Worcestershire Beacon.

  • British Camp Car Park – perfect for walking up the iconic Herefordshire Beacon and exploring the southern hills.

  • Black Hill Car Park – ideal if you want to start near the midpoint of the hills.

Tip: Car parks can get busy on sunny weekends and holidays, so arrive early to secure a space. Parking charges apply, and funds go towards maintaining the hills.

What is the OS Map for the Malvern Hills?

If you’re planning a walk, the best Ordnance Survey map to use is:

  • OS Explorer Map 190 – Malvern Hills & Bredon Hill (1:25,000 scale).

This map covers the full ridge, nearby villages, and surrounding countryside, making it ideal for navigation. You can buy it online, in outdoor shops, or download it through the OS Maps app for mobile use.

Are the Malvern Hills suitable for beginners?

Yes! While some sections are steep, many of the paths are well-maintained. Beginners often enjoy shorter walks such as:

  • Worcestershire Beacon loop from North Quarry (about 2 hours).

  • British Camp to Herefordshire Beacon (about 1 hour round trip).

Make sure to bring sturdy footwear, water, and a jacket, as the weather can change quickly on the ridge.

Can I bring my dog?

Absolutely – the Malvern Hills are very popular with dog walkers. Please keep dogs on a lead near livestock and always follow the Malvern Hills Trust guidelines.

When is the best time to visit the Malvern Hills?

The Malvern Hills are beautiful all year round.

  • Spring & Summer: wildflowers, longer daylight hours, and warmer temperatures.

  • Autumn: colourful foliage and quieter trails.

  • Winter: crisp views, but be prepared for muddy paths and colder weather.
