What is Nordic Walking?
Nordic walking is a walking technique that uses poles to involve the upper body in movement. When done correctly, it turns a normal walk into a more active exercise by engaging the arms, shoulders, core, and legs together.
It is widely used as a gentle form of exercise suitable for most fitness levels and can be adapted depending on ability and terrain.
Benefits of Nordic Walking
Nordic walking is a researched walking technique that uses poles to involve the upper body as well as the legs. When done correctly, it increases the physical demand of walking compared with normal walking.
Research shows that, compared with regular walking:
More muscles are used, including the legs, core, arms, shoulders, and upper back
The body works harder due to the pushing action of the poles
It can involve a greater level of cardiovascular demand compared with normal walking
It encourages better posture and more active use of the upper body
It is a low-impact activity that places less stress on joints than higher-impact exercise such as running
Nordic walking is therefore a practical way to improve general fitness while staying gentle on the body.
